Blowing bubbles is an oral exercise that can help with self-calming and strengthens the facial muscles which are needed for speech articulation. They encourage fine motor skills such as hand-eye coordination and dexterity, as well as balance, body awareness, and visual tracking skills. Then there is the joy of chasing and popping those bubbles that is the time-tested past time of children and is a gross motor skill!!
You can make bubbles without sugar, and they will be as much fun, but they last just that bit longer in the air if you put the sugar in.
1/2 cup dishwashing liquid
1 1/2 cups water
2 teaspoons sugar (optional)
Pour your dishwashing liquid into a container (with a lid for easy storage if you have leftovers)
Add the water slowly and gently trying not to make bubbles at this point
Add the sugar
Gently stir
Either use straight from the container or pour some in a tray
Dip your wand in, lift out, and blow - an added benefit is that this is a great exercise to help children learn to blow out
12 cups water
1 cup dishwashing liquid
1 cup cornflour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl or bucket
Mix slowly and gently, trying not to make bubbles at this point
Leave for about 1 hour so the mixture can settle
Dip in a large wand, slowly lift out, and wave
You can buy wands in all sizes and trays for dipping into or you can make your own. Pipe cleaners are great, you can shape them into hearts, squares, stars all work or your traditional round which molding it around a jar or similar will get you the perfect shape. Wire coat hangers for your large wands - shape around a bucket if you wish. Experiment with what works best for you.
